Short Code Initiative

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) remain widespread challenges, with many survivors unable to seek help due to fear, stigma, or lack of access to safe reporting channels. In many cases, survivors are silenced by threats, societal pressure, or even financial dependence on their abusers. Recognizing these barriers, our organisation is launching the Short Code Initiative, a groundbreaking effort to ensure that survivors can report cases safely, anonymously, and at no cost.

With the support of Safaricom, we are securing a dedicated short code that allows survivors to send text messages free of charge. This service ensures accessibility even for those without personal phones, as they can borrow a device and still send a report without incurring costs. By providing this lifeline, we empower survivors to reach out for help without fear of retaliation.

The Short Code Initiative will enable our organisation to respond swiftly to reported cases, coordinating rescues where necessary and ensuring that survivors receive the support they need. Additionally, all reported cases will be forwarded to the relevant authorities, strengthening accountability and ensuring that justice is pursued.

This initiative is more than just a reporting tool—it is a step toward a society where survivors are heard, supported, and protected. By breaking down communication barriers, we are reinforcing the message that no one should suffer in silence and that help is always within reach. Together, we can create a safer, more just community for all.
